Nursing Associates, Physician Associates and the use of Patient Group Directions

Jo Jenkins, Specialist Pharmacist (Patient Group Directions) SPS Medicines Use and Safety Division Published

The below summaries the legal position on the use of PGDs by Nursing Associates and Physician Associates

Only those professions listed in legislation can operate under a Patient Group Direction (PGD).

Neither Nursing Associates nor Physician Associates are currently included within the legislation so cannot operate under a PGD.

Whilst these professions may be considered in the future for inclusion within the legislation this would require scoping and consultation by NHS England, the support of the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) and the agreement of the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care before the legislation could be revised. This is a lengthy process and we have not been informed of any plans to begin the exercise.

For advice on the administration of medications which have been supplied under a PGD please refer to the Q&A Delegation of supply or administration of medicines using a Patient Group Direction
