Safety in Lactation: Anti-inflammatory eye preparations

Laura Kearney, Regional Principal Medicines Information Pharmacist, Midlands and East Medicines Advice Service (Midlands site) & UK Drugs in Lactation Advisory ServicePublished

This section excludes ophthalmic corticosteroids.
Anti-inflammatory preparations for ophthalmic use have limited systemic absorption in the mother, and pose negligible risk to a breastfed infant. Systemic absorption from eye drops can be minimised by restricting passage into tear ducts immediately after administration (link to technique).
There is no published evidence of safety or milk levels for any of the listed ophthalmic anti-inflammatories.
