Safety in Lactation: Drugs for influenza

Additional information relating to breastfeeding

To be used in conjunction with individual drug entries for specific information and guidance.

Data are limited regarding the use of oseltamivir and zanamivir via any route during breastfeeding, although both would be considered compatible; oseltamivir is the preferred choice.

If an infant being breastfed by a mother receiving oseltamivir or zanamivir needs direct treatment or chemoprophylaxis, the recommended dose for infants should still be given.

These recommendations may change with outbreaks of pandemic or atypical influenza.
