Safety in Lactation: Topical nasal decongestants

Sarah Fenner, Acting Co-Director, Midlands and East Medicines Advice Service (Midlands site) & UK Drugs in Lactation Advisory ServicePublished

Drugs used for nasal decongestion have limited systemic absorption in the mother, and pose negligible risk to a breastfed infant. There is no published evidence of safety or milk levels for any of the listed drugs when used intranasally.
Steam inhalation may be an alternative to nasal decongestants whilst breastfeeding.
