General inhalation anesthetic that induces muscle relaxation and reduces pains sensitivity by altering tissue excitability. It does so by decreasing the extent of gap junction mediated cell-cell coupling.
In a 12-month study assessing prevalence of acute pain (regardless of cause) in 6,371 children attending emergency departments (EDs) in Ireland by ambulance, 2,635 (41%) has pain documented as their primary symptom. Of these children, 689 (26%) children received an analgesic agent prior to ED arrival and 1,324 (50%) children had an analgesic agent administered on arrival at ED .
