To support the philosophy of antimicrobial stewardship within the North West region.
Antimicrobial stewardship is defined as:
“an organisational or healthcare-system-wide approach to promoting and monitoring judicious use of antimicrobials to preserve their future effectiveness”
To support the antimicrobial pharmacists to deliver the antimicrobial strategy by sharing key components:
1. Antibiotic guidelines
2. Education and training – CPD for members and resources for delivery of antimicrobial training to pharmacists and other healthcare professionals
3. Monitoring and surveillance: to co-ordinate region wide surveillance and audit e.g. IV to oral switch
To provide a network to share ideas, foster best practice and support antimicrobial pharmacists in delivering services, providing mentorship as required.
To offer an opinion where needed on topical issues e.g. de-regulation of antimicrobials POM to P.
To liaise with other regional groups with an interest in antimicrobial prescribing e.g. northwest microbiologists group, PHE.
