Using lipid-lowering medicines during breastfeeding

21 April 2023Rosuvastatin, pravastatin and atorvastatin are preferred; simvastatin and ezetimibe can also be used. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Using laxatives during breastfeeding

24 October 2023Any laxative can be used during breastfeeding although prucalopride should be used with caution. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Using SSRI antidepressants during breastfeeding

13 January 2023Paroxetine and sertraline are the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) of choice. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants only.

Using heparins during breastfeeding

19 January 2024Low molecular weight heparin and unfractionated heparin can be used during breastfeeding. Recommendations apply to full term, healthy infants only.

Using beta-blockers during breastfeeding

2 June 2023Labetalol, metoprolol or propranolol are the beta-blockers of choice during breastfeeding. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants only.

Using nitrofurantoin during breastfeeding

6 February 2024Nitrofurantoin can be used during breastfeeding. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Using benzodiazepines during breastfeeding

15 February 2024Lorazepam and oxazepam are the preferred benzodiazepines during breast feeding, if clinically appropriate. Recommendations apply to full term, healthy infants.

Using gastrointestinal antispasmodics during breastfeeding

8 March 2024Hyoscine butylbromide, propantheline or peppermint oil are preferred choices during breastfeeding. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Treating rectal and anal disorders during breastfeeding

19 March 2024Rectal and anal topical preparations for haemorrhoids and anal fissures are compatible with breastfeeding. Recommendations apply to full term, healthy infants.
