Medically terminating a pregnancy during breastfeeding

28 September 2023Breastfeeding can be continued following short term treatment with mifepristone and misoprostol. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Treating heartburn and dyspepsia during breastfeeding

5 March 2024Antacids, alginates, H2-receptor antagonists or proton pump inhibitors can be used during breastfeeding. Recommendations are for full term and healthy infants.

Treating insomnia during breastfeeding

8 March 2024Zopiclone and zolpidem are preferred for the short-term management of insomnia during breastfeeding. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Using chloramphenicol during breastfeeding

16 June 2022Topical chloramphenicol can be used with caution and monitoring. Systemic chloramphenicol is not recommended. Advice applies to full term and healthy infants.

Using NSAIDS during breastfeeding

2 February 2024Ibuprofen or diclofenac are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) of choice. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Using gabapentin or pregabalin during breastfeeding

1 March 2022Gabapentin or pregabalin can be taken during breastfeeding and with infant monitoring. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants only.

Using domperidone for low milk supply

21 June 2024Domperidone can be used to treat low milk supply. However, this is only after thorough assessment and once non-medical interventions have been tried.

Using contrast agents during breastfeeding

11 April 2025Breastfeeding need not be withheld after commonly used amidotrizoate, barium, gadolinium or iodinated contrast agents. Applies to full term and healthy infants.
