In use shelf-life of eye preparations should be based on manufacturers’ recommendations; where no recommendations are provided a risk based approach should be taken.

The NHS Pharmaceutical Quality Assurance Committee has produced guidance to assist with local risk based decision making. It is applicable to licensed and unlicensed medicines and also to medical devices.
