SPS protocol templates for the supply and administration of omeprazole for caesarean section by registered midwives.

Provenance

Developed by SPS and NHS England, reviewed by the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RCOG), with the support of specialists working within clinical practice for medicines commonly supplied for the prevention of complications in pregnancy.

Legally providing GSL/P medicines by registered midwives

SPS advice to support registered midwives in the legal administration and/or supply of Pharmacy Only (P)/General Sales List (GSL) medicine, using omeprazole tablets as an example can be found here

Template versions available

Version 2.0 of these protocol templates, valid from April 2026, have been published to allow organisations to undertake local governance processes in a timely manner.

Versions 1.0 of these protocol templates remain currently valid and will be removed from this page on their expiry (31st March 2026).
