Understanding supervision
The Section 10 exemption from the Medicines Act permits aseptic preparation of medicines under the supervision of a pharmacist, without the need for a Manufacturing Specials authorisation from the MHRA. The NHS Pharmaceutical QA Committee published a document to provide guidance to the NHS on the practical application of this exemption.
In 2026, it is anticipated that this exemption will be extended to registered Pharmacy Technicians, so this guidance will be replaced with web pages to support this transition.
