The SPS Medicines Advice (MA) team provides a clinical enquiry answering service. This offers timely, evidence-informed and tailored advice on the safe and effective use of medicines. This service supports pharmacy professionals, GPs, nurses, dentists, allied health professionals and commissioners in both primary and community care settings, including care homes in England. Any healthcare professional can contact the team regarding our publications or tools.

Medicines Use and Safety
The SPS Medicines Use and Safety (MUS) team answers questions from healthcare professionals in NHS or NHS commissioned services in England. The team specialises in:
- Medicines governance including Patient Group Directions and legal mechanisms for the supply or administration of medicines
- The Medication Safety Officer (MSO) role and related medication safety enquiries
- Events, for example webinars

Procurement
The SPS Procurement team’s aim to is to ensure safe, cost-effective, and consistent access to medicines across NHS services. We support NHS organisations in secondary care by providing expert advice and operational support for the procurement of medicines and pharmacy-related services. Healthcare professionals, from the secondary care sector, can contact us in order to:
- Obtain professional guidance on sourcing and supply of medicines, both licensed and unlicensed.
- Flag issues relating to the supply and availability of medicines, either for local or national resolution.
- Gain assistance with national tenders and their implementation.
- Obtain support in relation to the implementation of new to market biosimilars and generics in order to help deliver “best value”.
- Obtain advice on how to turn national procurement strategies into local adoption and delivery.
Quality Assurance
The Quality Assurance team supports the continuous quality improvement in the arrangements for the safe handling, preparation and purchasing of medicines across the NHS. They do this through a programme of audit of section 10 aseptic units, the provision of advice and the development of best practice guidance resources.
