SPS PGD template for the insertion of etonogestrel (e.g. Nexplanon®) 68mg subdermal implant for contraception.

Provenance

Written by SPS and the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH), with the support of specialist stakeholders working within clinical practice, for use within reproductive services.

August 2025 – note the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) has now changed its name to the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH). Some web pages and CoSRH documents will continue to display the FSRH name; where you see FSRH, this refers to CoSRH. All weblinks are still active.

Planned update

Change to licence: extension of use to 5 years issued May 2026

The MHRA have updated the Summary of Product Characteristics (SPC) for the etonogestrel implant (Nexplanon®) and it is now licensed for use for up to 5 years in the UK.

We are in the process of updating version 3.0 of the etonogestrel implant (Nexplanon®) PGD template (published April 2026, before the licence change) to the 5 year duration of use, with the support of the CoSRH. This updated PGD template is expected to be published in July 2026.

In the interim, services who have not authorised version 3.0 of the PGD template may wish to amend the template with the updated duration of use, with the agreement of their local development group.

For further information see CoSRH CEU statement: extension of use of the etonogestrel implant (Nexplanon®) to 5 years
